History
- The green valleys of Ragusa countryside are the
scenario which surrounds this striking Villa built by the
end of the 18th century. Mum Anna Maria’s fondness for
local architectonic tradition, inspired her to accurately
restore the whole mansion, the tenements and the garden.
Mum Anna Maria took special care of every detail recreating
the magical atmosphere of the Sicilian culture of past time. For
example, the exterior of the buildings is white, the worm
colour coming from the “ dry masonry of Modica”,
behind the buildings you can see the garden with its dominant
secular palm trees, multicolour flowers and a blue swimming
pool.
The interiors, once old stables, today have a brand new look
and they have been converted into the dwellings for our guests.
These holiday cottages were sometimes used as dépendences
to host some family’s friends, today they host tourists
looking for an ancient world, rich in traditional and cultural
values.
Recreational
activities at Villa San Filippo - In the framework
of this noble building, who once was an outpost and today
holiday house, a young couple is committed in recreating a
cultural environment for those who desire “to travel
with their heart and feelings” rediscovering the traditional
scenario.
Today
at Villa San Filippo, an enchanted spot of the island, we
are reviving the most ancient values.
Not only we host you in restored ancient mansions furnished
according to the Sicilian style but we do also organise amusing
recreational activities such as theatre representations performing
short novels and songs about the city of Modica set in magical
landscape of the patronal house. Each corner of the house
has its own story made of past rural memories, personal memories
performed by theatre companies that periodically recreate
fantastic settings and invite us to travel into tradition
through our feelings and emotions. This old rural house, once
was the stage of Calabrese bands that gathered here to dance
and to sing popular songs at evenings during the olive-harvest
season. Today, in full respect of tradition, a group of friends
recount the memories of their forefathers in dialect and with
music. Furthermore for groups of at least 20 people, it is
possible to reserve and organise long walks to the wonderful
"Cava Ispica", “Ispica Caves”, to be
hosted in a “Masseria” (Typical Sicilian farm)
and to travel in the fantastic world of tradition trough your
eyes, taste, and feelings. At Cava Ispica you can horse ride
while you admire the beauties of the natural park.
At Villa San Filippo we also organise important and amusing
recreational activities as for example cooking classes based
on the grandmother’s recipes. We offer the possibility
to teach our guests how to cook "scacce" (flat bread
filled with cheese and vegetables) and “gelo”
jelly of different flavours: lemon, carob, cinnamon, brown
almonds, melon and must. The courses are hold by Mum Anna
Maria in the magical setting of the patronal house.
Finally at Villa San Filippo our guests may ride one of the
mountain bikes we leave at their disposal to make a tour along
the tracks of the Modica countryside passing through olive
and carob trees. Today Michele, Muni and mum Anna Maria, enjoy
to manage Villa San Filippo. Their activity was born from
an idea conceived 10 years ago, now it has grown up, without
forgetting that their old and patronal mansion won’t
never change.
